Swamp Tour Today. One Hour drive over to Slidell, LA across Lake Pontchartrain. Interesting to note that Lake Pontchartrain is Brackish Water (salt) and is the second largest salt water lake in the United States. Shipping channels are maintained by dredging, but the majority of the lake is 8 feet deep. The lake is 1,600 square KM. So large it looks like the ocean.

These facts are from our Tour Guide: This area is 10 feet below sea level, New Orleans is 18 feet below. Unless you are 10 feet above seawater it is either impossible or very expensive to get house insurance. Therefor, most of the houses here are built on stilts, or they just built cheap houses in anticipation of only using them for 5-10 year until a Hurricane destroys them.
