Watkins Glen State Park is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Many long narrow lakes, similar in appearance to fingers provide the water for many waterfalls and gorges in this area. Watkins Glen is by far the most picturesque, although we did not see the others, how can you possible get any better than this.
This entire post covers a 1.5 hour walk along Glen Creek, the pictures are similar but at the same time completely different, consider yourself warned. This is a great spot for photographers, just go early in the morning or later at night, as the crowds of people can easily ruin a photo.
The park was operated from 1863 -1906 as a private attraction, the State of New York purchased the park in 1906 and converted it into a State Park. At some point, walkways, stairs, bridges and tunnels were added to permit people to walk the entire Gorge. Some of these tunnels and bridges are ancient and very likely date to the parks original opening in 1863.
Rainbow falls and this particular shot is by far the most famous scene from Watkins Glen. We waited here for about 30 minutes to try and get this shot with no people in it. We grew impatient and eventually settled for this one, it was a busy day on these tight, cramped trails.
Watkins Glen was a very enjoyable way to spend a day, outside. The $8 per vehicle admission was very reasonable and included parking, use of a huge swimming pool and access to the trails. At just over 4 hours by vehicle from NYC, it is a must see if you have the time.
