The Everglades are not what we thought. Against popular belief, the Everglades is not a swamp, but rather a large very slow moving river. The water is unbelievably clean and clear. Most of Southern Florida’s drinking water comes from the Everglades. The aquatic life here is amazing, you can look in any body of water and see large fish, turtles etc. The birds are also very interesting, the Anhinga being the most interesting. This bird can swim for long periods under water, it spears fish on its long beck and returns to the surface, throws the fish in the air and swallows it whole. As the bird is too heavy to fly with wet wings, it then fans out its wings to dry them. Of course there are Alligators here as well, and Crocodiles. Gators live in fresh water and Crocs in Salt Water. Where the Everglades meets Florida bay is the only place in the World where Gators and Crocs live together. We were also lucky enough to see a Manatee.
Everglades is amazing, but again, Humidity in the high 90’s and 30 C!!!! Bring lots of water, you will sweat.
